Empowered Expression
This immersive 8-week course focuses on the celebratory and richly layered rhythm known as Djansa (also spelled Dansa)—a vibrant 4/4 rhythm from the Kayes region of Mali. With its driving swing, call-and-response foundation, and room for expressive solos, Djansa offers the perfect bridge between structured ensemble playing and spontaneous musical creativity.

Who’s Invited: All drummers Intermediate or above
We’ll dive deep into ensemble performance, exploring how different djembe parts interlock to create a cohesive and dynamic rhythmic flow. A key focus will be on breaks—their timing, execution, and role in guiding the music. You’ll learn how to transition smoothly between rhythms, anticipate cue signals, and develop the confidence to hold your part while listening and responding to the group. These sessions will help you deepen your understanding of the music while having fun in a supportive and engaging setting.
